Expamet Construction provided design, manufacture and supply of approximately 1000 lm of masonry support for PLF Limited, brickwork contractor for the Ernest Cookson School one of the first new schools built as part of the Liverpool Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.
Working closely with PLF Limited, the Expamet Construction design team provided practical, cost effective solutions to a variety of design issues.
A steel frame design consisted of 6 core buildings surrounding a courtyard area with additional links between main buildings. Masonry support was generally included at each floor above window heads.
Close liaison with the engineers was necessary as structural elements within the frame were unable to withstand the loads being imposed on them.
Expamet Construction therefore redesigned systems to suit the structural elements on site. This was continued throughout the project to ensure Health and Safety, design and value engineered solutions were achieved.
Expamet Construction designed to surveys of structural steel where extreme tolerances were apparent. It was necessary to coordinate with glazing and curtain walling, external walkways and links between buildings.
Site visits by the Expamet team ensured effective communication between all necessary parties in order to effectively manage any complications and provide immediate solutions.
Raymond Porteus, Managing Director of PLF Limited commented, ‘Expamet Construction’s efficiency in design service, manufacturing lead times and overall performance has been second to none. I look forward to working with the team again’.
